Bob Carr is an Australian politician and former journalist, known for his long career in the government of New South Wales and later in federal politics. He began in journalism before entering the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1983; in the following decade he became leader of the state Labor Party and, in 1995, was sworn in as Premier, a post he held for ten years. His administration was notable for conservation policies, extensive use of public–private partnerships to deliver infrastructure projects, and its role in city planning for the 2000 Olympic Games. During his terms, Carr was re-elected in 1999 and 2003, establishing himself as a state leader with remarkable longevity in office. At the same time, he faced criticism over the expansion of gambling machines in state venues, linked to problems of addiction. He resigned from the state government in 2005 and, years later, returned to politics at the federal level as a senator and as foreign minister. After leaving politics, he worked in academia and international relations, directing an institute focused on Australia–China relations. His legacy combines achievements in urban planning and conservation with social controversies arising from decisions on gambling policy.
