Bobby Driscoll — born Robert Cletus Driscoll — was an American child actor who rose to prominence starring in Disney studio productions in the 1940s and 1950s. He became known for roles in films such as Song of the South, So Dear to My Heart and Treasure Island, and he also served as the animation model and voice of the title character in Peter Pan (1953). He was the first child actor to sign an exclusive contract with Disney and received a special Academy Award for his performance in The Window.
His transition to adult roles proved difficult; as a teenager he faced a shortage of offers beyond the “child star” stereotype. In the 1950s he worked mainly in television and radio, earning honors such as the Milky Way Gold Star. As an adult he became involved with the alternative art scene in Los Angeles and later with Andy Warhol’s Factory community in New York, producing visual work and collages that were shown in exhibitions.
Substance abuse problems undermined his health and career, culminating in his premature death in 1968; his body was initially unclaimed and buried in a potter’s field, later identified by family members. His legacy remains tied to his pioneering role as a Disney child actor and to his memorable contributions in film and voice work that influenced generations.
