Bobby Joe Morrow was an American sprinter best known for his three gold medals at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, winning the 100 m, 200 m and the 4x100 m relay, in which the U.S. team set a new world record. Emerging at Abilene Christian University, he first made his mark in 1955 by winning his first national title in the 100 m and had his most outstanding season in 1956, when he equaled the world records in the 100 m and 200 m at the U.S. trials. Over the course of his official career he set multiple world records in sprint and relay events and won national titles in 1955 and 1958, establishing himself as one of the leading sprinters of his era. In 1956 he was chosen by Sports Illustrated as the male Athlete of the Year and was later honored with induction into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. After retiring from competition in 1960, he worked as a farmer and merchant while maintaining ties to his Texas community. His sporting legacy is remembered both for his Olympic triumphs and for the marks that helped define men's sprinting in the 1950s.
