Bobby Richardson is a former American professional baseball player, best known for his time as a second baseman for the New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. Known for his defensive reliability, he teamed with Clete Boyer and Tony Kubek to form one of the era’s top double-play combinations, earning five straight Gold Glove Awards from 1961 to 1965. At the plate he stood out in 1962 when he led the American League with 209 hits. Richardson achieved notable distinction in the World Series: in 1960 he was named the only World Series MVP ever to come from the losing team, thanks to an exceptional offensive performance, and in 1962 he helped decide the championship by fielding a hit from Willie McCovey that entered baseball lore. He appeared in multiple All-Star Games between 1962 and 1966 and won World Series titles in 1961 and 1962. After ending his playing career relatively young, he returned to teaching and to coaching college baseball, guiding the University of South Carolina to its first College World Series in 1975 and winning the Big South championship with Coastal Carolina in 1986. He also sought public office by running for a congressional seat in 1976 and remained involved with Christian organizations throughout his life.
