Bobby Womack was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose career spanned more than six decades and covered R&B, soul, gospel, doo‑wop, blues, and funk. He began singing in childhood with his brothers in the group the Valentinos, under the mentorship of Sam Cooke, and became known both as a vocalist and as a backing guitarist for major artists of the era. As a songwriter, Womack wrote and recorded “It’s All Over Now” with his brothers — a song that became the Rolling Stones’ first UK number one — and penned hits for other performers. His own discography includes notable hits such as “Lookin’ for a Love,” “That’s the Way I Feel About Cha,” “Woman’s Gotta Have It,” “Harry Hippie,” and the 1980s hits “If You Think You’re Lonely Now” and “I Wish He Didn’t Trust Me So Much.” In addition to his solo work, he was a sought‑after session musician and collaborator: he played and recorded with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Sly and the Family Stone, and Janis Joplin, among others, and contributed compositions that shaped later interpretations, such as “Breezin’.” Recognized for his influence on soul and R&B, Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, leaving a legacy as a versatile performer and songwriter whose songs crossed genres and generations.
