Boris Abramovich Berezovsky was a mathematician, businessman, and a prominent figure among the Russian oligarchs who emerged during the post-Soviet transition. With advanced training in mathematics and work in research on optimization theory and control, he became an associate member of the Russian Academy of Sciences before moving into commercial ventures during perestroika, amassing great wealth from businesses in technology, oil, aluminum, and media. Throughout the 1990s he established a position of political influence: he was part of the circle of power around President Boris Yeltsin, took an active role in the 1996 campaign, and exercised considerable indirect control over companies such as Aeroflot and the state television network ORT. He was also one of the leaders of the so-called “Big Seven” oligarchs, whose financial and media support was decisive in the political scene of the time. After Yeltsin’s presidency ended, his relationship with power deteriorated. Involved in legal disputes and accused of fraud and money laundering, he left Russia and lived in exile, continuing political activity opposed to Vladimir Putin’s government and founding liberal movements abroad. His career shaped debates about privatization, media concentration, and the interconnection of business and power in contemporary Russia.
