English actor with a long and versatile career, Brian Aherne distinguished himself on stage, in film and on television between the 1910s and the 1960s. Trained in the British theatre, he gained international recognition acting opposite Katharine Cornell in several Broadway productions, most notably The Barretts of Wimpole Street, a play that cemented his partnership with Cornell and defined his work in American theatre. In film, he worked in Hollywood with figures such as Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Rita Hayworth, alternating leading and supporting roles. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Emperor Maximilian in Juarez (1939). He also appeared in productions for major studios including MGM, RKO and Columbia. During the Second World War he temporarily left his film career to serve as a Royal Air Force flight instructor in the United States. On television he made appearances in classic series and anthologies — among them The Twilight Zone, Wagon Train and Rawhide — and continued to alternate between stage and screen until the mid-1960s. His legacy is that of an elegant, cosmopolitan performer able to move between American and British stages and studios, leaving a filmography and theatrical record recognized by critics and audiences.
