Brian Molko is a musician, composer and vocalist best known for fronting the band Placebo. Noted for his nasal, high-register voice, androgynous image and an aggressive guitar style with unusual tunings, Molko became a central figure in alternative rock from the band's emergence. His work also includes an acting appearance in the film Velvet Goldmine (1998) and collaborations with artists such as David Bowie, Michael Stipe and Timo Maas. Born in Belgium and trained in drama in London, Molko established himself through lyrics that address sexuality, mental health and substance use—subjects reflecting both his biography and the British cultural context of the 1990s and 2000s. In 2014 he published a collection of lyrics; a second edition was released in 2024. Over the course of his career, in addition to singing Molko has played guitar, bass, keyboards, harmonica and saxophone in live performances, employing a wide range of instruments and effects. He has received institutional recognition, including an Honorary Fellowship from Goldsmiths College, and remains culturally visible through his recordings, a fashion campaign appearance and collaborations that underscore his place in contemporary alternative rock.
