Brian Souter is a Scottish businessman best known for co-founding, with his sister Ann Gloag, the Stagecoach Group, one of the largest bus and train operators in the United Kingdom. From an enterprise launched with family capital, he expanded the company through acquisitions and a public offering, taking the group into Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the United States. At the same time he created brands such as Megabus and was involved in the operation of several rail services, establishing himself as a central figure in modern intercity transport.
Alongside his business activities, Souter managed a portfolio of private investments through Souter Investments and maintained interests in international transport and manufacturing ventures. His philanthropic work was channelled through the Souter Charitable Trust, which funded thousands of charitable projects and received substantial donations from him.
Also a public figure because of his political involvement, Souter funded public-interest campaigns in Scotland, which provoked public debate and at times drew criticism. In recognition of his services to the transport sector and the third sector, he received honours that underscored his national prominence. His legacy is marked by the transformation of private road and rail transport and by a significant philanthropic presence in the United Kingdom.
