Walter Brown “Brownie” McGhee was an American singer and guitarist, a central figure in folk music and the Piedmont blues style, best known for his long partnership with harmonica player Sonny Terry. Originally from Tennessee, he overcame the limitations imposed by childhood polio and became involved early in popular and gospel music, learning several instruments and building a repertoire of traditional material that blended blues, folk, and rural songs. The duo Terry & McGhee became a phenomenon beginning in the 1940s, recording, touring, and helping to spread the Piedmont sound in clubs, festivals, and on the 1960s folk-revival circuit; between 1958 and 1980 they spent most of each year on tour and in the studio. Although rooted in African American blues, at times they pursued commercial success with jump-blues ensembles and appearances in Broadway theatrical productions. In addition to an extensive discography and film and television appearances in his later decades, McGhee left a pedagogical legacy: his playing style and methods were passed on to students and documented in instructional collections. In 1982 he and Terry received the National Heritage Fellowship, an official recognition of their contribution to the folk arts in the United States.
