Bruce Hornsby is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist whose work spans folk, jazz, contemporary classical, bluegrass, rock, and the jam‑band scene. A three‑time Grammy winner, he rose to prominence in the late 1980s with the hit "The Way It Is," a song that addressed social issues such as poverty and racism and helped make the eponymous album multi‑platinum. His melodic sensitivity and characteristic use of syncopated piano helped shape a sonic blend often associated with the so‑called "Virginia sound."
Over the course of his career Hornsby has alternated roles as a bandleader (Bruce Hornsby and the Range), a touring member (he was a member of the Grateful Dead from 1990 to 1992), and a guest musician on albums by artists including Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Nicks. He progressively expanded his musical language by incorporating jazz and bluegrass and collaborated with figures such as Wayne Shorter, Charlie Haden, and Béla Fleck.
In addition to production and studio work, Hornsby has maintained side projects — including a bluegrass‑oriented group with Ricky Skaggs — and is recognized for his legacy as a versatile performer who moves between genres, influencing rock and jam‑band musicians and remaining active as a composer and performer.
