Bruno Julius Florian Taut was a German architect, urban planner and writer active during the Weimar Republic, known for both his built work and his theoretical writings. Trained in Königsberg, Berlin and Stuttgart, he worked with figures such as Theodor Fischer and Bruno Möhring before opening his own office; his work blends influences from the Garden City movement, Expressionism and Modernism. Taut gained recognition for housing projects and landmark exhibitions: the 1914 Glass Pavilion illustrated his pursuit of utopian, experimental glass architecture, while housing estates such as Gartenstadt Falkenberg, the Hufeisensiedlung and Onkel-Toms-Hütte tested social solutions to housing and the use of color as a guiding design principle. His reformist housing schemes stressed functionality, communal life and quality of living. As a theorist and artist, he put forward expansive urban concepts — notably the idea of the “City Crown” — and promoted an architectural vocabulary that combined color, social utopianism and material experimentation. His work with housing cooperatives and public agencies established a legacy that influenced social urbanism and remains a reference in studies of modern housing.
