Earl Rudolph “Bud” Powell was an American pianist central to the development of bebop in the 1940s and 1950s. Known for his virtuosic technique and harmonic inventiveness, he earned the reputation of being “the Charlie Parker of the piano,” alongside figures such as Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. His approach influenced generations of pianists and helped establish the piano as a solo instrument in modern jazz.
Over his career he recorded landmark albums — including series released by Blue Note, Verve and Norgran — that document both his work as a composer–improviser and live sessions and tributes to peers like Thelonious Monk. These records, many made between the late 1940s and the early 1960s, remain reference points for the rhythmic clarity and harmonic exploration typical of bebop.
Powell’s artistic life was marked by personal and health difficulties that interrupted his output and contributed to a shortened life. Even so, his musical legacy endures: his recordings and style remain reference points in the study of modern piano and continue to influence performers and scholars of jazz.
