Buddy Turman was an American boxer who fought as a heavyweight in the 1950s and 1960s. Turning professional in 1954, he fought 62 bouts, winning 45—32 by knockout—and became a regional figure in Texas, particularly in Dallas and Tyler. His career included a notable social milestone: in 1955 he took part in the first legally sanctioned interracial fight in the state, an episode linked to the end of segregation in Texas boxing.
Turman faced prominent opponents of the era, including Archie Moore, and trained for periods with rising figures such as Cassius Clay. Bouts at Madison Square Garden and campaigns abroad—in the Philippines, Italy, South Africa, Germany and England—expanded his international profile. A controversial loss to Roy Harris for the state title is cited as an obstacle to a possible shot at the world championship.
Outside the ring, he sought to supplement his income with various jobs and maintained professional ties with promoters and nightclubs in Dallas. He also made television appearances and counted other boxers and public figures among his friends. His legacy is that of a leading regional boxer who moved among the era’s major names and played a role in the gradual integration of the sport in the American South.
