Camille Flammarion was a notable French astronomer who worked as a researcher and science popularizer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He directed the Juvisy-sur-Orge observatory from 1883 and in 1887 founded the Société astronomique de France, promoting amateur observation and the wider dissemination of astronomical knowledge. His popular works, including Astronomie populaire (1880), reached a broad readership and helped bring astronomy beyond academic circles. Alongside his scientific work, Flammarion pursued investigations of psychic phenomena and studied spiritism from an approach that sought experimental methods. He served as president of the Society for Psychical Research and published on telepathy, mediumship, and psychic forces, holding an ambivalent position: he believed in the survival of the soul but demanded rigorous evidence and acknowledged fraud and psychological explanations for many phenomena. His career earned institutional recognition and the naming of several celestial features in his honor. Flammarion left a complex legacy: he contributed significantly to science popularization and amateur astronomy while playing a controversial role in psychical research, shaping contemporary debates about scientific method and the limits of investigation in his era.
