Carl Benz was a German engineer and inventor whose work lies at the heart of the modern automotive industry. In the final decades of the nineteenth century he concentrated on designing internal combustion engines and secured key patents — including solutions for ignition, the carburetor, the clutch, and the gearbox — that enabled practical use of the gasoline engine. In 1885 he completed the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, regarded as the first practical automobile, and after the 1886 patent it entered commercial production at his company Benz & Cie., the world’s first automobile factory. Through successive improvements the vehicle initiated serial production and influenced European manufacturers that soon adopted the technology. The company’s early survival depended heavily on the decisive support of his wife, Bertha, whose long-distance trip in 1888 demonstrated the automobile’s usefulness and spurred technical refinements. Benz’s business career culminated in the 1926 merger of his firm with Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft to form Daimler‑Benz, which would give rise to brands such as Mercedes‑Benz. Benz is widely acknowledged as a pivotal figure in the history of the automobile, often called the “father of the automobile” and cited as a benchmark for the industrial and technological development of personal transport.
