Carl Einstein was a German writer, art historian and critic associated with the European avant-garde of the early twentieth century. The author of novels and essays, he became known for his work on African art—most notably Negerplastik (1915)—which helped place African sculpture in dialogue with the development of Cubism and influenced artists such as Picasso and Braque. He contributed to key periodicals of the time and collaborated with modernist figures like Georges Bataille and George Grosz.
His output combined aesthetic and political concerns: alongside his research on non‑European art, Einstein articulated leftist positions, communist sympathies and anarchist perspectives that made him a controversial figure during the Weimar Republic. The play Die Schlimme Botschaft provoked a blasphemy trial in 1922, reflecting the polarized cultural climate of the period.
Pressed by the rise of the right, he went into exile in France in 1928 and took part in the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side. Persecuted and arrested after the Nazi invasion of France, he ultimately took his own life in July 1940. His legacy lies in his critical promotion of European modernism and in his pioneering recognition of the importance of African art for modern art.
