Carl Froelich was a pioneer of German cinema, a director and producer active between 1912 and 1951 who made or produced 77 films. Trained in electrical engineering and a former Siemens employee, he entered the film industry working with Oskar Messter, photographing news and events of the time. His debut as a filmmaker included a film about Richard Wagner (1913) and in 1920 he founded his own production company, Froelich-Film GmbH, which was responsible for notable works of silent cinema. Froelich played an important role in the transition to sound and color film: he directed Die Nacht gehört uns (1929), cited as the first German sound film, and produced early experiments in color cinema. In 1930 he consolidated his infrastructure by acquiring studios in Tempelhof, expanding his production capacity and his ability to launch new talent. During the 1930s he introduced and worked with figures who would become celebrated in German theatre and film. Between 1939 and 1945 he presided over the Reichsfilmkammer, the body connected to state control of the film industry under the Nazi regime; because of that position he was detained by the Allies and underwent denazification proceedings after the war. With his studios destroyed in the conflict, his postwar activity was reduced to only two films. His legacy is ambivalent: technical and industrial innovation in German cinema, marked by institutional collaboration with the regime’s cultural apparatus.
