Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz was a Prussian officer and one of the most influential military theorists of the nineteenth century. Active during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, he served in various armies, took part in decisive campaigns such as Borodino, Ligny and Wavre, and held staff positions and leadership roles at the Prussian War Academy.
His intellectual legacy centers on On War (Vom Kriege), published posthumously, which offered a philosophical and systematic analysis of war. Clausewitz emphasized politics as the purpose of war, the importance of moral forces and the inevitable operational uncertainty—the so‑called “fog of war”—and developed concepts such as friction, the trinity of war (popular, military and political elements) and military genius.
Rejecting rigid formulas, he portrayed war as a complex, dynamic phenomenon shaped by historical context and human decisions. His theory deeply influenced modern military doctrine and strategic thought and remains a central reference in studies of policy, strategy and the relationship between military force and state objectives.
