Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa was a military officer and senior commander of the Italian Carabinieri whose career was defined by a long fight against terrorism and the mafia. A Resistance fighter in World War II, he later built a professional career characterized by confronting banditry in Campania and Sicily, where he investigated crimes tied to the Cosa Nostra and contributed to significant inquiries, such as the case of Placido Rizzotto and the disappearance of journalist Mauro De Mauro. As commander of the Carabinieri Legion of Palermo (1966–1973) he gathered intelligence and produced reports that helped identify mafia structures; he also implemented organizational measures, including restrictive procedures for the detention of mafiosi. Promoted to senior posts, he helped create anti-terrorism units and, in the 1970s, coordinated police forces against the Red Brigades. In 1982 he took office as prefect of Palermo with the mandate to intensify repression of the Cosa Nostra; a few months later he was assassinated in an ambush on Via Carini, a crime that also cost the lives of his wife and a bodyguard. Posthumously awarded the gold medal for civil valor, his legacy remains linked to the institutional fight against organized crime in contemporary Italy.
