Carlota Joaquina Teresa Cayetana de Bourbon was queen consort of Portugal and the Algarves and of Brazil as the wife of King João VI. A daughter of Charles IV of Spain and Maria Luisa of Parma, she was raised in a strict Catholic environment and had a lively personality that scandalized the conservative Portuguese court, which helped fuel a negative public reputation and rumors about her conduct. During the court’s transfer to Brazil she engaged in political intrigues: she alleged her husband was mentally incapacitated and sought to exercise regental influence, entertained ambitions linked to the Spanish throne, and at times supported her son Miguel’s efforts to seize power in Portugal. These actions deepened her political and social isolation. The influence and scandals surrounding Carlota Joaquina made her a controversial figure during the transition from the Old Regime and the independence processes in Portuguese America. In her final years she was confined to the Palace of Queluz, where she died in 1830, leaving a legacy marked by dynastic disputes, court intrigues, and a strong public impression about the role of royal women in the politics of the period.
