Carol Hall was an American composer and lyricist, best known for writing the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1978), later adapted for film in 1982. Her theatre work also included the Broadway sequel The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public (1994) and the off-Broadway show To Whom It May Concern (c. 1986). A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Hall also worked as a singer and released records in the early 1970s on Elektra Records; she returned to recording with Hallways: The Songs of Carol Hall (2009). As a dramatist, she wrote eight one-act plays collected under the title The Days Are As Grass, published for theatrical licensing. Hall maintained a long collaboration with children’s and television productions, contributing for years to Sesame Street with songs such as "Women Can Be," "Big Bird's Beautiful Birthday Bash" and the Grammy-winning theme "True Blue Miracle." She also wrote songs for Free to Be... You and Me (1972) and lyrics recorded by artists including Barbra Streisand and by jazz musicians who worked with Bill Evans. A lifetime member of the Dramatists Guild Council and vice president of the Dramatists Guild Fund, Carol Hall made a significant contribution to musical theatre and children’s music before her death in 2018.
