Caspar David Friedrich was a German painter central to Romanticism, best known for allegorical landscapes that blend naturalism and symbolism. His compositions often place small human figures before vast horizons, mists, Gothic ruins and dramatic skies, inviting contemplation and metaphysical reflection. Trained in Greifswald and Copenhagen, he settled in Dresden and joined the Romantic circle that included artists and writers such as Philipp Otto Runge and Goethe. He gained attention early with works like The Cross in the Mountains, which provoked debate by merging landscape and religious feeling, and later had paintings acquired by the Prussian monarchy. From the 1830s his career declined: a stroke in 1835 impaired his ability to work and his output shifted to watercolor and sepia, increasingly marked by symbols of death. After a period of neglect, Friedrich’s work was reassessed in the 20th century, influencing Expressionist and Surrealist movements and cementing his reputation as an icon of German Romanticism.
