Cathy Guisewite is an American cartoonist best known for creating the comic strip Cathy, which ran in syndication for 34 years. The strip followed a career woman coping with food, work, relationships and family pressure — themes Guisewite used to comment on the contradictions faced by women caught between tradition and emerging freedoms. A graduate in English from the University of Michigan, Guisewite worked for years in advertising agencies and rose to a vice-presidential post before devoting herself full time to the strip; its gradual success led her to leave advertising in 1980. Cathy was carried by hundreds of newspapers, reaching nearly 1,400 at its peak, and produced multiple collection books over the decades. The character’s impact was recognized with major awards: Guisewite won an Emmy for an animated Cathy special and, in 1993, the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society. The strip ended in 2010, remaining a cultural reference on everyday tensions and the voice of a generation of urban women.
