Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb was a prominent French-speaking Belgian politician affiliated with the Centre démocrate humaniste (cdH). He held central posts for several decades: President of the Chamber of Representatives (1979–1980; 1988–1995), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1980–1981), and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior (1981–1986). In 1995 he was given the title of Minister of State.
Trained in law and economics, he combined his political career with academic work, teaching at various institutions on international relations, political economy, and public-sector management. He served as a member of the Chamber of Representatives from 1968 to 1995 and then moved to the Senate (1995–1999), and he also took part in the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
A party leader, he chaired the PSC (now cdH) at different times and worked within francophone regional bodies and the pro-European movement, becoming Vice-President of the International European Movement from 2002. He published on public finance, Belgian democracy, and political scenarios, reflecting his interest in institutional reform and the country’s federal architecture.
His long parliamentary and ministerial career shaped Belgium’s postwar politics, including participation in crises and in building the federal system, leaving a legacy as an influential figure of the French-speaking Christian democratic centre.
