Charles Francis Adams was an American lawyer, politician, diplomat and writer, and a member of one of the United States’ most prominent political families: the grandson of John Adams and son of John Quincy Adams. A Harvard graduate, he practiced law in Boston, contributed to the North American Review and held various public offices in Massachusetts, including seats in the state House of Representatives and Senate, and founded and edited the newspaper Boston Whig. He was later elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Republican and chaired the Committee on Manufactures. He resigned his seat to accept the post of minister (ambassador) to London during the Civil War (1861–1868), where he played a decisive role in preventing British recognition of the Confederacy and countering the South’s diplomatic and naval operations, including the issue of commerce raiders built in British shipyards. On his return, he declined the presidency of Harvard but joined its governing board and devoted himself to preserving the family’s documentary heritage: in 1870 he established the Stone Library, the first presidential library in the United States, assembling an extensive collection of works on history and politics. His legacy is associated with Union civil diplomacy and the institutional memory of the Adams era.
