Charles Francis Sweeny was an American businessman and socialite whose influence was most evident in the period before the United States entered World War II. Born into a wealthy family with roots in mining and international finance, he worked in the family banking business before devoting himself to public and military initiatives of his own. Based in London, he organized a local defense unit and, above all, proposed to the British Air Ministry the formation of squadrons made up of American volunteers to serve in the Royal Air Force. From his initiative the so-called Eagle Squadrons were created; their eagle emblem was designed by him and they brought together American pilots willing to fight alongside the British. Sweeny also had a notable social presence: he moved in European aristocratic circles, took part in sporting events, and was a public figure in the circles he frequented. He lived for decades in Mayfair and is remembered both for mobilizing aerial volunteers and for acting as an intermediary between the expatriate American community and British institutions during a critical phase of European history.
