Charles Augustus Lindbergh was an American aviation pioneer whose fame was cemented in 1927 when he completed the first nonstop solo transatlantic flight aboard the monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. The New York–Paris crossing, lasting about 33½ hours, earned him the Orteig Prize and a triumphant public reception that made him an international hero and a symbol of advances in commercial and long-distance aviation.
Throughout his career, Lindbergh also worked as an author and aeronautical consultant, taking part in tests, demonstrations and technical assessments for companies and air forces. His hands-on experience and prestige influenced developments in air navigation and public views of long-range flight.
Lindbergh’s personal and political life was marked by tragedy and controversy: the 1932 kidnapping and murder of his son and his isolationist positions in the 1930s, including praise of German technology, drew public criticism. After World War II he kept a lower profile as a consultant and spent his final years in Hawaii, where he died in 1974, leaving a complex legacy in the history of aviation.
