Friedrich Ebert was a German politician of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) who played a central role in the transition from the German Empire to the Weimar Republic. He began his career in the trade union movement and rose to lead the SPD’s revisionist wing, becoming the party’s general secretary in 1905. In November 1918 he became Reichskanzler in the final phase of the Empire and shortly afterward was elected Reichspräsident, a post he held from 1919 until his death in 1925. As head of state during the turbulent post–First World War years, he sought to stabilize the young republic amid political, social and economic crises, balancing revolutionary and conservative pressures. His tenure is remembered for efforts to consolidate democratic institutions under adverse conditions; at the same time he faced internal and external criticism for how he handled social conflicts and the military and paramilitary forces of the period. Ebert died in Berlin in 1925 and was buried in Heidelberg.
