Charles M. Duke Jr. is an American astronaut, Air Force officer and test pilot whose career is noted for his role on the Apollo 16 mission (1972) as Lunar Module pilot. On that mission he became the tenth—and youngest—man to walk on the Moon, conducting three extravehicular activities across the Descartes Highlands and logging more than 21 hours of EVA during his space career. A 1957 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Duke served as a fighter pilot in Europe and graduated from the Aerospace Research Pilot School, where he also instructed in aircraft such as the F‑101, F‑104 and T‑33. Selected for NASA’s astronaut corps in 1966, he served on key support teams, was CAPCOM for Apollo 11 and was a support crew member on critical missions including Apollo 10 and Apollo 13. After retiring from NASA in 1976, he continued his career in the Air Force Reserve, attaining the rank of brigadier general in 1979 and retiring from the service in 1986. His legacy combines pioneering achievement in lunar exploration, experience as a test pilot and a public role associated with the golden era of the American space race.
