Charles Peter Kennedy was a Scottish politician who led the Liberal Democrats from 1999 to 2006 and represented Ross, Skye and Lochaber in the British Parliament from 1983 to 2015. He began his parliamentary career as a member of the Social Democratic Party and, after its merger with the Liberals, took on prominent roles in the new party, including party president and various spokesperson positions. As leader, he led the Liberal Democrats in the 2001 and 2005 general elections, increasing the party’s number of seats to its highest level since 1923. He was a central figure in the opposition to the Iraq War, placing the party to the left of New Labour and standing out for his frequent media presence and affable communication style. His leadership also drew criticism and concern about his health and capacity to command in later years; in January 2006, after admitting he had received treatment for alcoholism, he resigned the leadership. He remained an MP in subsequent years, voting against the formation of the Cameron–Clegg coalition, until he lost his seat in 2015. Known for his oratory and charisma, Kennedy is remembered for helping to shape the liberal centre-left in the United Kingdom and for raising his party’s public profile during a turbulent political period.
