Charles Francis Richter was an American seismologist best known for creating, in 1935 together with Beno Gutenberg, an instrumental magnitude scale to quantify the strength of earthquakes. Based on the amplitude of seismic waves recorded by seismographs and calibrated for distance to the epicenter, the scale introduced an absolute criterion for measuring tremors, overcoming the limitations of earlier descriptive scales. Richter and Gutenberg also worked on converting scale points into released energy, consolidating its relevance for quantitative seismology.

Trained in theoretical physics with a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Richter worked at the Carnegie Institution of Washington before joining Caltech, where he became a professor of seismology. In 1954 he published, with Gutenberg, a reference text on seismology that helped establish the modern foundations of the field.

Over his career he published numerous scientific papers on magnitude, seismicity, and seismic phenomena, contributing to the standardization of measurements and to the understanding of seismic activity. His work has had a lasting impact on seismological practice and on public communication about earthquakes.
