Charles de Sousy Ricketts was a multifaceted artist active from the late 19th century into the early decades of the 20th, best known as a designer, typographer, and stage designer. He became a central figure in fine-book production when he founded and ran the Vale Press (1896–1904), where he designed typefaces, vignettes, and illustrations that blended medieval and Renaissance references with contemporary motifs, helping to renew the book as an art object. As an illustrator he won recognition for collaborations with symbolist and decadent authors of his time, including illustrations for works by Oscar Wilde. From the early 20th century he expanded into theatre and opera, creating costumes and sets for both classical and modern authors; his designs for Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado remained in use in later productions. Together with his partner Charles Shannon he assembled a significant collection of painting and sculpture and established a reputation as an art connoisseur. He declined the directorship of the National Gallery in 1915 and later served as an adviser to institutions such as the National Gallery of Canada. He also left critical writings and memoirs that record his influence on the aesthetic tastes of his generation.
