Charles Louis Seeger Jr. was an American musicologist, composer, teacher and folklorist whose career combined academic research, compositional practice and music-related public policy. A Harvard graduate, he worked at major institutions including Juilliard, The New School, Yale and universities in California, focusing on teaching and on developing ethnomusicology in the United States.
Seeger also served in federal cultural agencies during the 1930s–1950s, including the WPA Federal Music Project and resettlement programs, where he promoted the documentation and dissemination of popular and traditional repertoires. He was a founding member of the American Society of Comparative Musicology and originated editorial initiatives to make musical sources more widely available.
As a theorist, he is remembered for proposing the concept known as “dissonant counterpoint” and for his contributions to the definition of vocal style and to comparative methodology in musicology. His career had a lasting impact on the institutionalization of ethnomusicology and on linking musical studies with cultural policy in the United States.
