Charles Sobhraj, born Hotchand Bhaonani Gurumukh Charles Sobhraj, became a notorious figure in the 1970s and 1980s for a series of crimes committed along the so‑called hippie trail in South Asia. Operating as a con artist, thief and serial killer, he acquired nicknames such as "Bikini Killer" and "the Serpent" because of how several victims were found and his ability to evade justice. Authorities believe he killed at least 20 people; Sobhraj at times admitted to and later denied some of those homicides. His criminal career included elaborate scams, use of false identities and manipulation of companions and tourists to facilitate thefts and poisonings. Working with accomplices and using a pattern of luring victims into illicit schemes placed him at the center of international investigations, leading to arrests and escapes in multiple countries. He spent a long period imprisoned in India and was later sentenced in Nepal to life imprisonment for two murders. Sobhraj’s case reverberated worldwide, both because of the brutality and cunning of his crimes and due to media coverage that made him a symbol of the dangers faced by travelers at the time. His legacy is colored by an aura of mystery, controversy over the true number of victims, and debate about failures in cross‑border investigations that allowed his prolonged impunity.
