Charles Thomas Philippe Ulm was an Australian aviator and entrepreneur, known for his central role in the pioneering era of commercial aviation in the 1920s and 1930s. A veteran of the First World War, Ulm brought his entrepreneurial drive to aviation, founding and managing airlines and focusing on administration, fundraising and the financial operation of high-profile projects. Alongside Charles Kingsford Smith, Ulm organized and financed decisive ventures: the creation of Interstate Flying Services and, above all, the historic 1928 trans-Pacific crossing aboard the Southern Cross, a feat that helped establish long-distance flight credibility and raised the international profile of Australian aviation. In subsequent years he helped found Australian National Airways, where he handled administrative management and route development despite the challenges posed by the Great Depression and by accidents that led to the company’s dissolution. In 1934 he worked to promote transpacific flights through Great Pacific Airways; he disappeared that same year during an attempt to cross from California to Hawaii, leaving a legacy of operational innovation and promotion of commercial aviation in Australia.
