Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French composer and pianist of the Romantic era, known for his exceptional piano technique and for works of formidable difficulty that still challenge virtuosos today. A prodigy trained at the Paris Conservatory, he came to prominence while still young and maintained relationships with figures such as Chopin, Liszt, George Sand and Victor Hugo; Liszt even praised his technique as the most perfect he had encountered. His output is concentrated almost exclusively on pieces for piano, organ and pédalier, including sets of studies and large-scale works — notably the famous series of Twelve Studies in All the Minor Keys — which introduced musical ideas that were innovative for their time. Many compositions and translations he produced during his life have been lost. From middle age he lived in relative isolation in Paris, also devoting himself to religious and linguistic studies. After a long posthumous neglect, his work was gradually rediscovered in the 20th century by pianists and scholars and is now recognized for its singular character and technical legacy in the piano repertoire.
