Charles Magnus Gelbert was a professional baseball player in the United States, primarily a shortstop over ten major-league seasons between 1929 and 1940. He was the starting shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1929 to 1932, a member of the club that won the 1931 World Series and of the 1930 team that finished as National League runners-up. A graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Gelbert began his career in the minor leagues in 1926 and reached the majors shortly afterward when the Cardinals acquired him in 1927. His career was interrupted by a serious hunting accident that injured his left ankle and sidelined him for two seasons; on his return he served as a utility infielder for several teams, including Cincinnati, Detroit, Washington and Boston. At the end of his playing career he left respectable numbers: 876 games, a .267 batting average and 350 runs batted in (RBI). In the decade after retiring he worked in education and coaching, leading Lafayette College’s baseball team for 21 years and briefly managing a PONY League team. Gelbert died in 1967, remembered as a member of a championship team and as a dedicated college coach.
