Charles Parker Jr. was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Early in his career, Parker was nicknamed Yardbird, which was later shortened to Bird and remained Parker's nickname for the rest of his life. A founding figure of bebop, Parker's innovative approach to melody, rhythm and harmony has exerted an incalculable influence on jazz.
Consumed by alcohol and drugs, Parker led a brief and tragic life, which inspired creators such as the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar (who drew on him to outline the central character of the short story "O Perseguidor") and the filmmaker Clint Eastwood (who received his first Globo de Ouro for the 1988 film "Bird", starring Forest Whitaker, which, in turn, won the Best Actor prize at the Festival de Cannes thanks to this work).
