Charlotte Canning (born Charlotte Stuart) was a British aristocrat, artist, and one of the earliest women connected to colonial government in India. Married to Charles Canning, who served as Governor-General and then as the first Viceroy after the 1857 uprisings, Charlotte held a prominent social position and became the country’s first vicereine. Her place at the Victorian court as Lady of the Bedchamber secured close relations with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, a role she held until 1855.

A committed artist, Charlotte made her mark as a botanical illustrator and an early photographer on the subcontinent. She produced an extensive body of paintings and illustrations of Indian flora — described by historians as remarkable — and assembled albums that are preserved today. She also collected photographs and natural specimens during the travels that accompanied her husband, contributing to the period’s scientific and aesthetic documentation.

Against the turbulent backdrop of the final years of Company rule, the Canning family faced both criticism and political support; Charles’s elevation to viceroy symbolized the transfer of power to the Crown. Isolated by the dignity of her position, Charlotte found refuge in gardening and art, leaving behind artistic works and collections that attest to her naturalist sensibility.
