Charlotte von Mahlsdorf (born Lothar Berfelde) was a collector, antique dealer, writer, and a central figure in Germany’s 20th-century cultural and LGBT scenes. Founder and director of the Gründerzeit Museum in Mahlsdorf, she assembled and preserved a collection of everyday objects — clocks, furniture, clothing, and household appliances — salvaged from bombed houses and Berlin life, turning them into testimony to urban life and material memory. Her personal life, defined by asserting a female identity in adverse political and social contexts, made her a pioneer of trans visibility in Germany. During the years of the German Democratic Republic, the museum also served as a social space for the LGBT community and hosted important gatherings until a 1974 attempt at state control, which she met by donating part of the collection. The complexity of her biography includes collaboration with East German state security and controversial episodes after reunification, such as neo-Nazi attacks on the museum. Author of autobiographies and the subject of films and plays, Mahlsdorf received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1992 and left an institutional legacy: her collection remains on display at the Wilhelmine Style Museum in Mahlsdorf, a cultural reference and memorial to German LGBT history.
