Cherie Blair (born Theresa Cara Booth) is an English barrister, part‑time judge and writer, known for her work in employment law, discrimination and human rights. A member of Lincoln’s Inn, she was called to the bar in 1976 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1995; she acted in prominent cases, including Lisa Grant v South West Trains Ltd before the Court of Justice of the European Union, concerning discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation. In 1999 she was appointed a recorder (part‑time judge) and was a co‑founder of Matrix Chambers, a firm with a focus on human rights and public law.
Beyond her legal practice, she has held academic and institutional roles: she served as the third chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University (1999–2006), was a governor of the London School of Economics and of the Open University, and in 2011 became chancellor of the Asian University for Women. In 2008 she established the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, an organization dedicated to building the capacity of female entrepreneurs in developing countries.
Throughout her career she has taken part in international boards and events on law and leadership, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2013 for services to women and charity. She also serves as patron of several UK charities.
