Ray Charles (Ray Charles Robinson) was a pianist, singer, songwriter and bandleader whose career helped define soul music and broaden the borders of American pop. A pioneer in the 1950s, he blended blues, jazz, rhythm and blues and gospel to create a crossover sound that carried him from the R&B charts to the pop charts, with hits such as "I Got a Woman," "What'd I Say," "Hit the Road Jack" and memorable takes on standards like "Georgia on My Mind" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." As an artist he was also notable for securing rare artistic control for a Black musician at mainstream record labels, particularly during his years at ABC Records, and for moving between genres — from soul to country and jazz — without losing his identity. His work influenced generations of performers and earned praise from contemporaries such as Frank Sinatra and Billy Joel. Beyond his musical activity, Ray Charles faced personal challenges, including losing his sight in childhood and struggles with drugs, but he maintained critical and popular esteem until the end of his life. His posthumous duet album Genius Loves Company and the many Grammy Awards he received consolidated his legacy as one of the most important and influential voices in twentieth‑century American music.
