Rei da Espanha Fernando VI

Fernando VI, nicknamed The Wise, was King of Spain from 1746 to 1759. The son of Philip V and Maria Luisa of Savoy, he inherited a throne marked by court rivalries and by the strong influence of the widowed queen Isabel Farnese, whose removal from the center of power signaled the start of his reign. Of a melancholic and reserved temperament, he devoted himself to hunting and to music, becoming a patron of artists such as the famous singer Farinelli. Married to Infanta Barbara of Braganza in the so-called “Exchange of the Princesses,” Fernando VI pursued a strict policy of international neutrality, prioritizing the country’s economic and financial recovery after the conflicts of the early 18th century. During his reign he reorganized the Treasury and promoted the rebuilding of the Navy, while also supporting cultural and scientific initiatives. His reign was also marked by repressive measures, such as the Great Gypsy Roundup (1749) and the prohibition of Freemasonry (1751). In his final years, shaken by his wife’s death and by mental health problems, he withdrew from public life until his death in 1759. His legacy combines internal stability, support for culture, and a personal image as a discreet landowner and patron of the arts.
