Christa McAuliffe was a social studies teacher and American public figure who became prominent when NASA selected her for the Teacher in Space Project. Trained in Education with a specialization in American History, she taught at secondary schools in Maryland and New Hampshire, where she became known for teaching methods that emphasized the role of ordinary people in history and for courses such as “The American Woman.” Chosen from roughly 11,000 applicants in 1985, McAuliffe became a symbol of efforts to bring education and space exploration closer together: her participation was intended to allow live lessons from space to students across the United States. The appointment made her a national celebrity, with extensive press coverage and television appearances. In January 1986, as a member of the STS-51-L crew of the space shuttle Challenger, McAuliffe died when the vehicle broke apart 73 seconds after launch, a tragedy that deeply moved American society. Her legacy endures in the public memory, in educational initiatives, and in tributes recognizing her dedication to teaching and science outreach.
