Mark Harmon is an American actor whose television career became established through dramatic, long-running roles. Born into a family connected to the entertainment industry, he began in commercials and television films in the 1970s, appearing in series such as 240-Robert and the nighttime soap Flamingo Road before earning critical notice in heavier material. He rose to prominence with notable roles on St. Elsewhere — where he played a physician with AIDS — and in the miniseries The Deliberate Stranger, portraying a serial killer; these performances helped cement his reputation as a character actor. Over the course of his career he received major television award nominations, including Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nods.
