Christian Lous Lange was a Norwegian intellectual and diplomat committed to the internationalist movement in the early decades of the twentieth century. Trained in history and languages, he worked as a teacher and became a central figure in transnational organizations: secretary of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, technical delegate at the Second Hague Conference and, above all, secretary‑general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union from 1909 to 1933. In that role he managed the organization through the First World War and its relocations between Oslo, Brussels and Geneva. His public work extended to the League of Nations and to foundations such as the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he advised on arbitration and arms-control issues. In 1919 he published the first volume of Histoire de l’internationalisme, a work that helped shape the intellectual context preceding the League’s creation. For his prominence in promoting international cooperation, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1921, shared with Hjalmar Branting. He left a career devoted to building multilateral mechanisms and an institutional and bibliographic legacy connected to internationalism and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
