Christoph Martin Wieland was a German writer, translator, and poet of the Enlightenment whose work spanned literary currents from Rococo to Weimar Classicism. He is widely remembered as the author of the first Bildungsroman, The History of Agathon, and of the epic Oberon, which influenced later operas. He translated twenty-two of Shakespeare’s plays into German, decisively shaping the reception of the English dramatist in Germany.

Also active as a critic and editor, he founded and edited the magazine Der teutsche Merkur (1773–1789), an influential forum for the period’s literary and philosophical debate. He collaborated with Abel Seyler’s theatre company and wrote librettos and dramatic texts, as well as novels, satires—such as Die Abderiten—and tales inspired by the French fairy-tale tradition.

Intellectually, Wieland embodied Enlightenment cosmopolitanism and advocated moderate liberal politics: a constitutional monarchy and a free press. His work in Weimar placed him at the center of a cultural circle that included Goethe, Herder and, later, Schiller, leaving a lasting impact on German literature and criticism.
