Charles Byron “Chuck” Harmon was an American professional baseball player who served as a utility man (third base and outfield) in the 1950s. He made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Redlegs and also played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies, compiling a four-season MLB career and maintaining a steady presence in the minor leagues and Caribbean circuits. Athletically developed in Indiana and a Navy veteran of World War II, Harmon also excelled in college basketball at the University of Toledo and had a brief stint in the Negro leagues with the Indianapolis Clowns. In 1954 he became the first African American to play for the Cincinnati franchise, a milestone with social as well as sporting significance. After retiring as a player, he worked as a scout for baseball and basketball teams and held administrative roles in Cincinnati, remaining active in programs for seniors and youth. He received institutional recognition, including induction into the University of Toledo Athletic Hall of Fame and the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame, along with local honors that preserve his memory.
