Charles Frank “Chuck” Mangione was an American instrumentalist and composer, best known for his mastery of the flugelhorn and for successfully crossing between jazz and popular music. Trained at the Eastman School of Music, he rose to prominence in the 1960s as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and then led his own projects alongside his brother Gap, building a career that spanned more than 30 albums.

In the 1970s he achieved international recognition with the instrumental single “Feels So Good,” which reached the Billboard Top 10 in 1978, and with scores and compositions tied to high-profile events such as the Montreal Olympics (1976) and Lake Placid (1980). His work combined orchestral arrangements and jazz ensembles, earning him awards including Grammys for compositions and instrumental performances.

Beyond his recording career, Mangione appeared on television — notably with recurring appearances on the animated series King of the Hill — and remained connected to the Rochester scene as an educator and through charitable projects. His legacy is associated with popularizing the flugelhorn and with bringing jazz to broad audiences.
